Disc brakes are the new standard in road bike technology, providing increased stopping power, enhanced modulation and better performance in both adverse weather conditions and ideal riding conditions compared to rim brakes. For racers and performance-focused riders, disc brakes also improve handling and overall control, which allows you to carry speed through turns for a more fluid riding experience. No matter your age, fitness level, body size or even where you ride, disc brakes provide numerous benefits over traditional rim caliper brakes.


Complementing the FR Disc’s brakes are 12mm thru-axles, which provide a more secure interface over traditional quick-release skewers. Likewise, the FR’s thru-axles provide exceptional concentricity compared to quick-release skewers, which ensures that wheels remain in proper alignment, thereby assuring precise shifting and minimizing brake rub. For performance-minded riders, thru-axles provide a stiffer interface at the wheel dropouts than quick-release skewers, which means that steering input and power are transferred to the front and rear wheels, respectively, with utmost efficiency.


Disc brakes offer greater stopping power and, more significantly, more variation in the rider’s ability to control those braking forces without resulting in wheel skid—this variation is known as “modulation.” A rider’s ability to effectively modulate his or her braking is particularly vital when encountering technical descents, riding in large groups or making sudden stops safely. Disc brakes offer both increased power and improved modulation, which combine for an outstanding overall riding experience.

This philosophy of optimizing ride quality, performance and the overall cycling experience is built into every frame we craft, and it’s also implemented in component specification. Disc brakes offer greater stopping yet require less lever force. This means that disc brakes provide reduced hand fatigue over the course of a long descent, thus making the FR Disc a terrific option for all riders, but especially those with smaller hands or who prefer a lighter lever feel.


Sudden rain can ruin most any ride. Disc brakes provide uncompromised stopping power in wet weather due to their inherent design involving a metallic rotor positioned closer to the wheel’s hub combined with pads featuring larger surface areas of material. Whereas many rims with either carbon or aluminum brake tracks require an initial lever actuation to “shed” water from the braking surface, disc brake rotors do not, which results in virtually no performance loss throughout the braking action.


Along with rain or other wet riding conditions, excessive heat buildup can also reduce the effectiveness of rim caliper brakes. This is particularly true for heavier riders and/or lengthy descents when a rider is forced to continually engage his or her brakes. Disc brake rotors control heat far better than the brake tracks of aluminum or carbon rims. And whatever heat buildup does occur is isolated to the rotor, thereby reducing any excessive wear and tear involving the rim, tire or inner tube that could arise due to excessive heat from improper braking technique.


The savvy road racer will utilize the best equipment possible for any given stage, and that includes selecting the optimal tire for race day or a long training ride. ISO standards dictate that road bikes like the FR and FR Disc include an original tire specification of 28mm in width or narrower. The advent of disc brakes means that tire clearance is dictated only by the frame and fork, rather than by the fitment of other bicycle components. Riders who utilize tires outside of ISO standards do so at their own risk.
